Communicating with the elderly could be challenging and difficult.
Elderly are a gift and human asset.
It is very important to find out from the elderly, from their family or care givers what is important to them?
If you talk about the things that have been important to them, they will certainly respond.
For example if you play a music of the 40's or 50's this might bring them some connection.
Find out the things that he/she likes to eat, play or eat, find out the places he or she has visited.
Even if they cannot talk, still sitting down with them and talking about the things that are important can help to connect with them
I have seen patients who cannot talk but when they hear the music that they like the foot is moving , its like music is being enjoyed.
I remember of a patient she spoke when we were saying a rosary. The aide said this patient never spoke but she spoke today. I said she might have liked what we are doing.
The only way to connect with the elderly is to offer and talk what is important to them
